CNN —Lesbian Visibility Week, celebrated each year at the end of April, was first observed in California in 1990 and is marked around the world and in lesbian living rooms across America — including mine. Many laws have criminalized gay men but not women, leaving us in slightly safer territory. Gay men are also more likely to be victims of hate crimes and violence. Gay men might be criminalized, but gay women have long been targeted, sometimes in heinous ways that fly under the radar of the law, and which go unprosecuted. On this Lesbian Visibility Week, I am grateful both to be seen and to slip quietly under the radar, unnoticed.

Italy might have a female prime minister, but she makes a point of not identifying herself as a feminist. The prevalence of domestic violence in Italy is fed by societal failures, says Lorella Zanardo, an activist, educator and documentary filmmaker. While Italy does not have Europe’s highest rate of domestic violence, it is among the lowest ranked in Europe when it comes to gender equality. In Italy, the feminist movement was largely driven by the left, which meant that those who supported right-leaning parties, including current Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have distanced themselves from feminism entirely.

CNN —It’s a strange moment to be an American feminist who cares deeply about women’s rights beyond her own country’s borders. The news that the French National Assembly has passed a bill that would enshrine abortion rights in the country’s constitution evokes mixed emotions. But French feminists know better: They see rising right-wing movements around the world and understand how quickly circumstances can change. Hopefully, French women, and so many others whose countries are actually progressing on women’s rights instead of backsliding, see an easy victory. I’m glad French and other feminists are working overtime so that they don’t end up like American women.
